NGC 4316 is a spiral galaxy from the Hubble type Sc with active galaxies core in the constellation virgin on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 53 million light years from the Milky Way and approximately 40,000 light years in diameter. The galaxy is listed under catalog number VVC 576 as part of the Virgo galaxy cluster .
The galaxies NGC 4307 , IC 3211 , IC 3255 , IC 3274 are located in the same area of the sky .
The type II supernova SN 2003bk was observed here.
The object was discovered by Wilhelm Tempel on March 17, 1882 .
