NGC 4340 , is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type SB0 / a in the constellation Haar der Berenike in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 40 million light years from the Milky Way and about 35,000 light years in diameter . Together with NGC 4350 , it forms the gravitationally bound galaxy pair Holm 391 . Cataloged under catalog number VCC 654 as a member of the Virgo Galaxy Cluster.
The galaxies NGC 4383 , IC 787 , IC 3298 , IC 3340 are located in the same area of the sky .

The supernova SN 1977A, which reached a visual magnitude of 16.2 mag, was observed here.

The object was discovered on March 21, 1784 by the astronomer William Herschel with the help of his 18.7-inch mirror telescope.
