NGC 4342 = IC 3256 , is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type S0- in the constellation Virgo in the northern sky . It is estimated to be 31 million light years from the Milky Way and is cataloged under VCC 657 as a member of the Virgo Galaxy Cluster.
In the same area of ​​the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4341 , NGC 4365 , IC 3259 , IC 3267 and PGC 40338 .

The object was discovered on April 13, 1784 by the astronomer William Herschel .
