NGC 4356 = IC 3273 is an active spiral galaxy with extensive star formation from Hubble type Sc in the constellation Virgo to the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 48 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 45,000 light years across. The galaxy is listed under catalog number VCC 713 as a member of the Virgo galaxy cluster .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4318 , NGC 4415 , IC 3245 , IC 3271 .
The object was discovered on December 28, 1785 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
