Messier 84 (also known as NGC 4374 ) is a 9.2 mag bright galaxy with an area of 6 ′, 5 × 5 ′, 6 in the constellation Virgo .

M84 is located in the center of the Virgo galaxy cluster in the vicinity of the giant galaxy M87 and is about 43 million light years away from the Milky Way. In the past, their type was given in the Hubble sequence as E1 (elliptically flattened). Modern authors, however, tend to assume that it is a lens-shaped galaxy of the S0 type that we are looking at practically frontal.

M84 marks the beginning of the so-called Markaryan chain , a group of galaxies in an area about 1.5 degrees in diameter.

Messier 84 was first discovered by Johann Köhler on May 5, 1779 and rediscovered on March 18, 1781 by the French astronomer Charles Messier .
