NGC 4388 is a spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SA (s) b: in the constellation Virgo in the northern sky . The galaxy is 110 million light years from the Milky Way and is classified as a Seyfert-2 galaxy . It is part of the Virgo Galaxy Cluster , a collection of more than 1300 galaxies in this area. However, the galaxy is listed as a member (VCC 836) of the Virgo Cluster, and its peculiar appearance (as if a spiral galaxy was embedded in an elliptical galaxy) is believed to be due to gravitational or physical interactions with members of that cluster. In this case it would only be about 50 to 60 million light years and about 105 to 110,000 light years.

Recordings made using a line filter show escaping gas clouds

Narrow-band images show escaping gas clouds 100,000 light years in size. It is believed that they were formed when the galaxy hit hot intergalactic medium.

The object was discovered by the astronomer Wilhelm Herschel using his 18.7 inch telescope on April 17, 1784.
