NGC 4402 is a spiral galaxy of Hubble type Sb in the constellation Virgo the northern sky . It is likely around 50 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 55,000 light years in diameter .
The radial velocity of 230 km / s of NGC 4402 is too low to provide a reliable indicator of the distance, as particular velocities (without Hubble expansion) could make up a substantial part of the value. In fact, the 10 million light-year distance corresponding to its speed is far less than the redshift-independent distance estimate of around 50 million light-years.

The object is a so-called edge-on galaxy , i. H. we see them exactly at the edge. The spiral arms appear here only as dark dusty clouds, illuminated by the bright center of the galaxy. It is listed as a member of the Virgo cluster under catalog number VCC 873 .

The object was discovered on March 5, 1862 by the German astronomer Arthur von Auwers .

Special

There are at least four indications that NGC 4402 is being deprived of its gas supplies ( ram-pressure stripping ) by the dynamic pressure that arises when it moves through the intergalactic gas of the Virgo Cluster .
