NGC 4424 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBa in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is an estimated 17 million light-years from the Milky Way and about 20,000 light-years across .
The object is a so-called edge-on galaxy , i. H. we see them exactly at the edge. The spiral arms appear here only as dark dusty clouds, illuminated by the bright center of the galaxy. Furthermore, it is classified as a starburst galaxy , here new stars are emerging at an unusually high rate, the trigger for this could be the proximity of the galaxy IC 3366 .

Together with twelve other galaxies, it forms the NGC 4442 group ( LGG 288 ) and is listed as a member of the Virgo galaxy cluster under catalog number VCC 979 . In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4417 , NGC 4445 , IC 3350 , IC 3366 .

The supernovae SN 1895A and SN 2012cg ( Type Ia ) were observed here.

The object was discovered on February 27, 1865 by the astronomer Heinrich d'Arrest with a 28 cm telescope.
