NGC 4436 is a lenticular galaxy of Hubble type S0 in the constellation Virgo the northern sky , the estimated 48 million light-years from the Milky Way 's center. It forms an optical trio with NGC 4431 and NGC 4440 and is part of the Virgo galaxy cluster .
The object was discovered by Wilhelm Herschel on April 17, 1784 .
