NGC 4438 is a lenticular galaxy in the constellation Virgo that is approximately 33 million light years from the Milky Way . NGC 4438 and the galaxy NGC 4435 form an optical galaxy pair, but they do not interact with each other (NGC 4435 is less distant). According to findings from 2008, the strong deformation of NGC 4438 goes back to a close encounter with M 86 around 100 million years ago.
Halton Arp organized his catalog of unusual galaxies into groups according to purely morphological criteria. This galaxy belongs to the class of elliptical galaxies close to spiral galaxies and disturbing them (Arp catalog) .
NGC 4438 belongs to what is known as the Markaryan Chain , a group of galaxies in an area about 1.5 degrees in diameter.
NGC 4438 was discovered on April 8, 1784 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
