Heinrich Schaberg

Heinrich Schaberg (born December 8, 1833 in Hagen ; † April 9, 1914 in Hagen) was the secret medical councilor in his hometown and the second citizen to be granted honorary citizenship here .

Schaberg was born in the Hagen suburb of Eilpe in 1833 into a family of grinders . After finishing school, he studied medicine in Bonn and Berlin and at the age of 29 he established himself as a general practitioner in Hagen.

As a medical student, he campaigned for the establishment of a hospital in Hagen. In 1853 the Society for a General Hospital in Hagen was brought into being and in 1859 a "General Hospital" was actually founded in a residential building in Hagen. In 1867 Heinrich Schaberg was put in charge of it, who pushed for a new building, which was finally built at the current location on Buscheystraße. Schaberg managed the hospital almost until he was 80 years old.

Heinrich Schaberg was granted honorary citizenship of the city on July 15, 1907 . A street in the city center of Hagen is still named after him today.
