NGC 4417 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type SB0 in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is an estimated 34 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 35,000 ly. The galaxy is listed under catalog number VCC 944 as a member of the Virgo galaxy cluster .
The galaxies NGC 4424 , NGC 4442 , IC 3357 , IC 3366 are located in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered on April 15, 1784 by Wilhelm Herschel .
