NGC 4440 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SB (rs) a in the constellation Virgo in the northern sky , which is an estimated 30 million light years away from the Milky Way . It forms an optical trio with NGC 4431 and NGC 4436 and is part of the Virgo galaxy cluster .

The object was discovered by Wilhelm Herschel on April 17, 1784 .
