NGC 4457 is a lenticular galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type SB0 / a in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is an estimated 36 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 30,000 ly. It is listed as a member of the Virgo Galaxy Cluster under catalog number VCC 1145 .

In the same area of the sky is u. a. the galaxy NGC 4412 , NGC 4480 , NGC 4496 , NGC 4505 .

The object was discovered by Wilhelm Herschel on February 23, 1784 .

On July 1, 2020 was supernova of type Ia discovered in the galaxy that the designation SN received 2020nvb. With a visual brightness of 13.1 mag on July 1, 2020, it is relatively bright. However, since it is only 9 arc seconds away from the active core of the galaxy, it can only be photographed using a telescope.
