NGC 4477 is a lenticular galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type SB0 in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 58 million light years from the Milky Way and about 60,000 light years across. It is listed as a member of the Virgo galaxy cluster under catalog number VCC 1253 and is also part of the Markarian chain .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4459 , NGC 4468 , NGC 4473 , NGC 4479 .
The object was discovered on April 8, 1784 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
