NGC 4469 is a lenticular galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type SB0 / a in the constellation Virgo north of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 21 million light-years from the Milky Way and about 25,000 light-years across. Together with twelve other galaxies, it forms the NGC 4442 group ( LGG 288 ) and is listed as a member of the Virgo galaxy cluster under catalog number VCC 1190 .

In the same area of ​​the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4451 , NGC 4483 , NGC 4488 , IC 3430 .

The object was discovered on April 15, 1784 by the astronomer William Herschel with the help of his 18.7 inch reflector telescope.
