NGC 4478 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E2 in the constellation Virgo the northern sky , the estimated 58 million light-years from the Milky Way 's center. The galaxy is located near the galaxy NGC 4476 and is part of the Virgo Galaxy Cluster .
The object was discovered on April 12, 1784 by the astronomer William Herschel using his 18.7 inch mirror telescope.
