NGC 4491 is a spiral dwarf galaxy with extensive star formation regions of the Hubble type SBa in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 20 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 10,000 light years in diameter. Together with twelve other galaxies it forms the NGC 4442 group ( LGG 288 ) and is listed as a member of the Virgo galaxy cluster under catalog number VCC 1326 .

The galaxies IC 3431 , IC 3437 , IC 3446 , IC 3452 are located in the same area of ​​the sky .

The object was discovered on March 15, 1784 by Wilhelm Herschel .
