NGC 4504 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBc in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 39 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of about 25,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 4487 , NGC 4520 , IC 799 , among others .
The object was discovered on March 20, 1789 by the astronomer William Herschel with the help of his 18.7-inch mirror telescope.
