NGC 4522 is a bar-spiral galaxy with extensive star formation regions of the Hubble type SBc in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 101 million light-years from the Milky Way and about 110,000 light-years across.
The galaxy moves at a speed of around 10 million kilometers per hour through the gas between the galaxies, creating a violent wind that also carries away the gas from NGC 4522. This makes their interstellar matter seem to blow into intergalactic space . The astronomers refer to this effect as "ram pressure stripping".
It is listed under catalog number VVC 1516 as part of the Virgo galaxy cluster. In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4519 , IC 3487 , IC 3517 , IC 3518 .
The object was discovered on January 18, 1828 by the British astronomer John Herschel .
