NGC 4517 = NGC 4437 is an edge-on - spiral galaxy with extensive star formation from Hubble type Sc in the constellation Virgo to the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 46 million light years from the Milky Way and around 155,000 light years in diameter. Due to its favorable inclination, it was included in various studies on globular clusters as an observation object.
Together with LEDA 41578 , it forms the isolated pair of galaxies KPG 344 . In the same area of the sky is u. a. the galaxy NGC 4541 .
The object was discovered by Wilhelm Herschel in 1784 .
