NGC 4527 is an active bar-spiral galaxy with large-area star formation regions of the Hubble type SBbc in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is an estimated 74 million light years from the Milky Way and has a disk diameter of around 140,000 ly. It is listed as a member of the Virgo Galaxy Cluster under catalog number VCC 1540 .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4533 , NGC 4536 , NGC 4544 , IC 3474 .
The object was discovered on February 23, 1784 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
