NGC 4442 is a lenticular dwarf galaxy of the Hubble type SB0 in the constellation Virgo at the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 22 million light years from the Milky Way and about 32,000 light years in diameter. It is listed as a member of the Virgo galaxy cluster under catalog number VCC 1062 and is the brightest galaxy of the NGC 4442 group ( LGG 288 ). Gravitational binding with PGC 40974 is possible . In the same area of ​​the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4445 , IC 3412 , IC 3357 , IC 3374 .

The object was discovered on April 15, 1784 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
