IC 3414 is a spiral dwarf galaxy of the Hubble type SBdm with extensive star formation areas in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 21 million light-years from the Milky Way and about 10,000 light-years across. Together with twelve other galaxies, it forms the NGC 4442 group ( LGG 288 ) and is listed as a member of the Virgo galaxy cluster under catalog number VCC 1189 .

In the same area of ​​the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4430 , NGC 4432 , NGC 4453 , NGC 4466 .

The object was discovered by Arnold Schwassmann on November 8, 1899 .
