NGC 4443 = NGC 4461 is a lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type SB0 / a in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is an estimated 84 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 85,000 light years in diameter. Together in NGC 4458 , it forms the (optical) galaxy pair Holm 411 . It is the brightest galaxy in the NGC 4461 group ( LGG 286 ) and is listed as a member of the Virgo galaxy cluster under catalog number VCC 1158 .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4435 , NGC 4473 , IC 3386 , IC 3393 .
The object was discovered on April 12, 1784 by the German-British astronomer Wilhelm Herschel .
