IC 794 is an elliptical galaxy of Hubble type E2 in the constellation Virgo to the ecliptic . It is an estimated 83 million light years from the Milky Way and about 30,000 light years across. Together with eight other galaxies, it is part of the NGC 4461 group ( LGG 286 ) and under catalog number VCC 1073 it is listed as a member of the Virgo galaxy cluster .

In the same area of ​​the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4431 , NGC 4436 , NGC 4440 , IC 3381 .

The object was discovered by Stéphane Javelle on April 23, 1892 .
