Messier 83 , sometimes called the Southern Pinwheel Galaxy , is a spiral galaxy in the constellation Water Snake on the border with Virgo . In the northern hemisphere, it can only be observed in the evening in the spring.
Although M83 is a quite bright galaxy with an apparent magnitude of 7.5 mag, it is difficult to observe from Central Europe, as it is only 10–15 ° above the horizon. Observed from southern latitudes, it is one of the brightest spiral galaxies in the night sky.
The galaxy is about 17 million light-years away and name-giving for the M83 group , one of the local group adjacent group of galaxies , which includes the bright galaxy Centaurus A contains.
The galaxy was discovered by Nicolas Louis de Lacaille in 1751 .
Appearance
M 83 already appears in the prism binoculars as a round, misty spot. The beam structure and spiral arms become visible in a larger telescope .

Supernova SN 1968L
On July 16, 1968, while searching for comets , the South African amateur astronomer John Caister Bennett accidentally discovered an unusual appearance in the center of the galaxy M83. Shortly afterwards, this was recognized as a supernova by professional astronomers . It was the first visual discovery of a supernova since the invention of the telescope.
