M83 group
The M83 group is one of the local group neighboring galaxy group , which extends over the constellations water serpent (Hydra), Centaur and the southern part of Virgo . The group is divided into two subgroups: the NGC-5128 subgroup , which is 12 million light years (3.7 Mpc ) away and at the center of which is the radio galaxy Centaurus A (NGC 5128), and the M83 subgroup , which is about 15 million light years (4.6 Mpc) away and groups around the southern pinwheel galaxy M83 .
Some sources list both subgroups as a common group, while others describe both as separate galaxy groups, so that the NGC-5128 group and the M83 group are referred to. The almost seamless transition from one to the other subgroup and the almost vanishing relative movement of the two parts to one another justify the description as a single group. The M83 group resembles our local group in this capacity, which is also divided into two large dynamic subgroups. The distance between the two main galaxies M83 and NGC 5128 is, however, about 4.5 million light years larger than the distance between the Andromeda Galaxy and the Milky Way . The masses of the two subgroups were estimated using the virial theorem to be 1.1 × 10 12 M ☉ (M83) and 4.9 × 10 12 M ☉ (NGC 5128). The total mass of the group is about 6 × 10 12 M ☉ about three times as large as the mass of the local group.
Members of the M83 group
Identification of the members
The brightest group members were identified in early galaxy surveys. However, many dwarf galaxies could only be assigned to the group through modern, intensive studies. One of the first of these investigations with the UKST at the Anglo-Australian Observatory detected 145 faint objects in the images, which were then both in the 21 cm line (with the Parkes radio telescope ) and in the H-alpha light with the Siding-Spring- 2.3 m telescope from the Australian National University . In the end, 20 dwarf galaxies were identified as members of the group. The HIPASS survey identified five other already cataloged galaxies as members. Another dwarf galaxy was found as part of the HIDEEP survey, and 20 other candidates were found through a variety of other investigations.

Furthermore, ESO 219-010 , PGC 39032 and PGC 51659 are listed as possible members of the NGC-5128 subgroup, ESO 381-018 , NGC 5408 and PGC 43048 as possible members of the M83 subgroup. Although HIPASS J1337-39 is only listed as a possible member of the M83 subgroup, recent research has strongly substantiated this assumption.
