Astronomy & Astrophysics , abbreviated to A&A or Astron. Astrophys., Is a specialist journal for astronomy and astrophysics .
A&A was created in 1969 by merging six European trade magazines:
- Annales d'Astrophysique (France), founded in 1938
- Arkiv for Astronomi (Sweden), founded in 1948
- Bulletin of the Astronomical Institutes of the Netherlands (Netherlands), founded in 1921
- Bulletin Astronomique (France), founded in 1884
- Journal des Observateurs (France), founded in 1915
- Zeitschrift für Astrophysik (Germany), founded in 1930
A&A was expanded in 1992 with the inclusion of
- Bulletin of the Astronomical Institutes of Czechoslovakia (Czechoslovakia), founded in 1947
In 1990 'Astronomy and Astrophysics' was merged with its previously separately published supplementary sister organ 'Astronomy and Astrophysics Supplement Series'. The copyright holder is the European Southern Observatory .
A&A is now one of the leading journals in astronomy, along with the Astrophysical Journal , Astronomical Journal and Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society .
Member States
The original member states were the four countries of the A&A merged magazines ( France , Germany , the Netherlands and Sweden ) as well as Belgium , Denmark , Finland and Norway . ESO participated as a 'Member State'. Norway later withdrew, while Austria , Greece , Italy , Spain and Switzerland joined. The Czech Republic , Estonia , Hungary , Poland and Slovakia followed as new members in the 1990s. In 2001 the addition "a European magazine" was removed from the front page to reflect its increasing global role, and in 2002 Argentina was added as an "observer". In 2004 the Board of Directors decided that "A&A will in the future consider applications for supporting membership from any country worldwide with well-documented, active, and outstanding astronomical research." Argentina became the first non-European country to acquire full membership in 2005. Brazil , Chile and Portugal became observers at the time and are now full members. Other member states are (as of early 2012) Bulgaria , Croatia and Lithuania . There are no personal publication costs for astronomers from member states when publishing in A&A, as the costs are borne by the supporting states.
