Canes Venatici I group
The Canes Venatici I group , CVn I for short , also M94 group , is a group of galaxies which, with a distance of about 13 million light years, is one of the closest collections of galaxies outside of the local group . Like the Local Group and other neighboring galaxy groups, it belongs to the Virgo Supercluster. The group is located in the sky in the constellations Hunting Dogs , named from the Latin Canes Venatici , and Hair of Berenike . The brightest member that certainly belongs to this group is the 9.0 mag bright spiral galaxy M 94 . The membership of the galaxy M 106 , which is roughly equally bright, but absolutely brighter due to the significantly greater distance, is controversial.
Investigations into the dynamics of the group indicate that the members of the group are only weakly bound to one another by gravity. This can be deduced from the fact that the radial velocities of the individual group members correspond to those to be expected for the respective distance due to the expansion of the universe . The lack of spheroid dwarf galaxies in this group also indicates the weak bond between their members.
Members
The following table lists the uniquely identified members of the group according to the Nearby Galaxies Catalog , the Lyons Groups of Galaxies Catalog (LGG), and the lists obtained from the Nearby Optical Galaxy sample by Giuricin et al. were created.
