Messier 94 = NGC 4736 is a spiral galaxy of the Hubble type Sab with the dimensions 14.4 '× 12.1' and the apparent magnitude of +8.1 mag in the constellation Hounds in the northern sky . It is an estimated 16 million light years from the Milky Way and about 60,000 light years in diameter.
It is one of the brightest galaxies in the Canes Venatici I group , a group of galaxies in the vicinity of the Local Group within the Virgo supercluster .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies IC 3795 , IC 3808 , IC 3835 , IC 3842 .
properties
It is a LINER galaxy, a form of AGN galaxy whose core region contains weakly ionized gas.
The galaxy contains two rings, the inner one of which is characterized by a very high rate of star formation, which in turn is caused by the ejection of gas from the center. M94 is therefore also classified as a starburst galaxy .

discovery
The object was discovered on March 22, 1781 by the French astronomer Pierre Méchain .
