NGC 4746 is an active spiral galaxy with extensive star formation from Hubble type Sb in the constellation Virgo to the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 78 million light years from the Milky Way and about 50,000 light years across.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4754 and NGC 4762 .
The object was discovered by John Herschel on March 29, 1830 .
