NGC 4731 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBc / P in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is an estimated 62 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 130,000 light years in diameter . Together with PGC 43526 it forms the galaxy pair Holm 472 .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4775 , NGC 4786 , NGC 4697 , IC 3812 .
The object was discovered by Wilhelm Herschel on April 25, 1784 .
