NGC 4717 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBa in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is around 204 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 85,000 light years . The galaxy has two strikingly divergent spiral arms , so it is believed that it forms an interacting galaxy trio with its neighbors NGC 4716 and PGC 43465 . Together with three other galaxies, it forms the NGC 4760 group ( LGG 312 ).
The galaxies NGC 4703 , NGC 4764 , NGC 4759 , IC 3826 are in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered by Wilhelm Tempel on April 12, 1882 .
