NGC 4729 is a 12.4 mag bright elliptical galaxy of the Hubble type E0 in the constellation Centaur in the southern sky . It is estimated to be 142 million light-years from the Milky Way and about 70,000 light-years across .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4706 , NGC 4730 , NGC 4743 , NGC 4744 .
The object was discovered on June 8, 1834 by John Herschel with an 18-inch reflector telescope, who only wrote “The first of three”.
