NGC 4761 is a 13.9 likes bright elliptical galaxy from the Hubble type E6 in the constellation Virgo to the ecliptic . It is an estimated 193 million light years from the Milky Way and about 50,000 light years across. Together with NGC 4764 , NGC 4776 and NGC 4778 it forms the Hickson Compact Group 62 and together with NGC 4759 the galaxy pair Holm 477 .
The object was discovered in March 1882 by Ernst Wilhelm Leberecht Tempel .
