Jayro Bustamante

Jayro Bustamante (*  1977 in Guatemala ) is a Guatemalan film director , screenwriter and producer . Bustamante, the son of a doctor, lived in the high plateaus of Guatemala until he was 14 years old.

Life

Bustamante first studied communication at the Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala in Guatemala City . He then worked for the international agency Ogilvy & Mather as a director for commercials. Bustamanta then studied directing at the Conservatoire Libre du Cinéma Français in Paris and screenwriting at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome.

In 2009, Bustamante and Marina Peralta founded the production company La Casa de Producción in Panajachel , Guatemala, which has produced most of his films to date.

Bustamante's first international attention was primarily due to his short film Cuando sea grande (German translation: “When I'm grown up”), which was shown at the 2012 Alpinale , among other places .

Bustamante was represented in the competition at the 65th Berlinale with his latest film Ixcanul (2015) . This makes him the first Guatemalan director to be invited to the Berlinale competition. At the 65th Berlinale, Ixcanul was awarded the Alfred Bauer Prize 2015 as a "feature film that opens up new perspectives" . The film also received a nomination for the Amnesty Film Prize of the Berlinale.
