NGC 5220 , also known as the Sombrero Galaxy , is a 12.3 mag bright spiral galaxy of the Hubble type Sa in the constellation Centaur and about 181 million light-years from the Milky Way.
The object was discovered on June 3, 1836 by John Herschel with an 18-inch reflector telescope, who noted "vF, S, R, precedes a star 10th mag distance 1.5 diam by diagram".
