NGC 5196 is a 14.2 mag bright elliptical galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type E / S0 in the constellation Virgo north of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 287 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 65,000 ly.
In the same area of ​​the sky are the galaxies NGC 5184 , NGC 5192 , NGC 5197 , NGC 5202 .

The object was discovered by Albert Marth on April 12, 1864 .
