NGC 5185 is a 13.6 likes bright spiral galaxy of Hubble type Sb in the constellation Virgo to the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 329 million light years from the Milky Way and about 180,000 light years in diameter .
In the same area of ​​the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 5167 , NGC 5181 , NGC 5207 .

The supernovae SN 2006br ( Type Ia ) and SN 2006dz were observed here.

The object was discovered on March 19, 1787 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, who described it as “vF, S, iF, time a little inaccurate”.
