NGC 5170 is a relatively isolated edge-on spiral galaxy in the constellation Virgo . It is around 62 million light years away. The globular cluster system of this galaxy was the subject of an analysis using HST images.

The object was discovered on February 7, 1785 by William Herschel using his 18.7-inch mirror telescope.
