NGC 5162 = NGC 5174 is a 12.5 likes bright spiral galaxy with an active galactic nucleus from Hubble type Sc in the constellation Virgo north of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 304 million light years away from the Milky Way and has a diameter of around 245,000 ly.
In the same area of the sky are the galaxies NGC 5165 , NGC 5171 , NGC 5178 , NGC 5191 , among others .

The Supernova SN 2007cd was observed here.

The object was discovered twice; first on March 15, 1784 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope , which she called “Two, mistaken for one; but 240 shewed (sic) them both. cL, vF ”. This discovery is listed as NGC 5174 and the second named object is NGC 5175 .
John Herschel observed them several times in 1828 and confirmed his father's notes with the entries “eF, E; involves a star at the south end, and has a star 6 mag 15 arcmin south and a few seconds preceding "and" vF; two close together, or one E nearly in the meridian. A star 11 likes north “.
The second discovery was made on April 19, 1887 by Lewis A. Swift (listed as NGC 5162 ), who “vF, pL, eE [not lE as in the NGC]; an eeF * at each focus of ellipse; B * in field sp; F * nr nf “noted.
