NGC 5183 is a 12.7 mag bright spiral galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type "Sb" in the constellation Virgo north of the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 189 million light years from the Milky Way and about 105,000 ly in diameter.
The galaxies NGC 5192 , NGC 5196 , NGC 5197 , NGC 5202 are in the same area of the sky .
The object was discovered on April 11, 1787 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, which she labeled “Two. The preceding F, pS, iF. The following pB, pL, iF, bM ”described. The second galaxy named is NGC 5184 .
