NGC 5188 is a 12.1 mag barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type SBbc / P in the constellation Centaur and about 102 million light years from the Milky Way.
It was discovered on May 1, 1834 by John Herschel with an 18-inch reflector telescope, which during two observations “faint, pretty large, round, gradually little brighter in the middle; 45 arcseconds "and" faint, pretty large, slightly elongated, very gradually little brighter in the middle; 50 arcseconds ”.
