NGC 5178 is a 14.0 mag bright lens-shaped galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble type S0 / a in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 276 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 100,000 light years in diameter.
Together with 2MASX J13293420 + 1138105 it forms the galaxy pair Holm 522 . Together with NGC 5171 , NGC 5176 , NGC 5177 and NGC 5179 , it forms a small group of galaxies .
The object was discovered on May 11, 1883 by Ernst Wilhelm Leberecht Tempel with a 10.5-inch refractor .
