NGC 5179 is a lens-shaped galaxy with an active nucleus of the Hubble-type S0 in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 322 million light years from the Milky Way and about 70,000 light years across.
Together with NGC 5171 , NGC 5176 , NGC 5177 and NGC 5178 , it forms a small group of galaxies .

The object was discovered on May 5, 1883 by Sherburne Wesley Burnham using an 18.5-inch refractor .
