Witness: The Tour
(2017-18)

The Prismatic World Tour was the third concert tour of the US - a musician and songwriter Katy Perry , with her fourth studio album Prism applied. The tour began in Belfast , Northern Ireland in May 2014 and continued to North America . From June to October, one dollar was donated to UNICEF for every ticket there . Then she went to Australia , Europe , Asia and dragged on until October 2015, where she gave her last concert in San José , Costa Rica .

Unlike their California Dreams Tour , on this tour there was no clear story to be told. Nevertheless, the show was divided into seven thematic, so-called "sections", which were based on the songs, the costumes and the appearance.

The tour was the fifth most-visited tour in the world, according to Billboard Magazine , and the most-visited tour by a female solo artist. In 2014 alone, it generated revenues of $ 108 million and more than 1 million visitors.

The promoters of this tour were Live Nation , SJM Concerts, AEG, OCESA / Zignia Live and Dainty Group, the director of the tour is called Baz Halpin.

Background and development

Perry first spoke about her tour while attending the We Can Survive event held at the Hollywood Bowl in October 2013 . There she encouraged her fans to come on her tour next year, which - according to Perry - will be "magical". The magazine Entertainment Weekly she told:

“The tour is going to be fantastic. I always try to take it to the next level. I think people will realize what the tour is going to be like when they listen to the music. (The tour is going to be fantastic. I always try to take everything to the next level. I think people will realize what the tour will be like when they hear the music) "

She also emphasized that she would be “very close” to the fans during the concerts. In addition to her appearance on the song Unconditionally , she also announced at the MTV Europe Music Awards 2013 in Amsterdam that her concerts will be less cartoony and the world of sweets will no longer exist, but will be a "feast for the eyes".

“I will bring all the bells and whistles on tour again, like on my California Dreams Tour , but not as much is being told as it was recently. I just want a little more space to express myself better ... I'm really excited. I had a big touring meeting yesterday and I saw the graphics that are being shown on stage and it's different from what I've seen other artists and different than I've ever done. It's different, fresh and it's in the middle of the audience. "

- Katy Perry to Capital FM about the changes to her tour from the California Dreams Tour and her views on her show

She officially announced her tour on November 18th via Twitter , where she also announced the first dates for Northern Ireland , Scotland and England as well as the opening act ( Icona Pop ). Accordingly, their tour started on May 7, 2014 in the Odyssey Arena in Belfast . According to the official press release, it was also announced that their show will be a “multi-faceted spectacle” and will include a so-called area around the stage called “The Reflection Section”. This enables Katy - as already mentioned - to be closer to the fans. More details about the stage are given below. The second section of appointments - covering Canada , the United States, and Mexico - was released two months later on January 15, 2015. Ferras , which Perry as the first artists in their self-founded record label Metamorphosis Music has recorded, was the opening act for all North American concerts, as well as Capital Cities , Kacey Musgrave , the duo Tegan and Sara and Becky G . The third section, including shows in Australia and Oceania, was released in February 2014. Betty Who took over the opening act from November 7th to 28th, who then swapped it with Tove Lo , who was responsible for it until the end of the Oceania tour. The fourth part (Europe) was also announced via Twitter, but not until June 2, 2014. The British singer Charli XCX was committed to all appointments in Europe, which lasted from February to March 2015. The Asian region was the location of the Prismatic World Tour between April and May 2015, but only for 12 shows. Ferras returned as the opening act for the concert in Taipei, while The Dolls were responsible for all the remaining concerts. On April 7, 2015, "The Dolls" announced that they would be the opening act in Tokyo, Makau, Manila, Jakarta, Singapore and Bangkok. Tinashe , AlunaGeorge , Gala Brie and Durazno were signed up for the Latin American concerts (the last part of their tour in September and October 2015) .

Costumes

The Prismatic World Tour has seven different sections, and accordingly there were also many different costumes that she wore and changed during the tour. Not only were the costumes varied, she also changed the wigs depending on the section. In order to give the fans an insight in advance, she put up a new draft of one of her costumes every day on Instagram as a countdown to the first concert. Well-known designers were involved in this process, including Valentino , Roberto Cavalli and also Moschino’s creative director and Perry’s best friend Jeremy Scott.

Her initial outfit was designed by Italian designer Roberto Cavalli . The silver outfit consists of a skirt and a crop top, both with mirror optics and refractive elements. Both the top (neckline, waist, arms) and the skirt have light elements that shine over the entire performance and change the colors. She also wore her hair tied in a ponytail with additional extensions, which are also equipped with the luminous elements. Matching glitter shoes and silver, fingerless gloves complete the package.

The Egyptian outfit was also designed by an Italian, Fausto Puglisi . She wears a purple leotard that reads, among other things, “Pharest of them all”, a play on the Egyptian word “Pharaoh”. The entire costume is hand-embroidered and mainly in purple, gold and glitter and is lavishly decorated. It is also equipped with hand-embroidered golden elements, it has a richly decorated collar and an artfully decorated gold-purple skirt, which can be removed during ET and I Kissed a Girl . She wears purple thigh high boots. As a headdress she wears a gold crown and a blonde wig with black fringes and black ends.

Her "Cat-Oure" costume was designed by The Blonds . It's a pink, glittering leopard leotard, completed with a pink tail and a matching pink plastic hat with cat ears. The neckline is nude and has plenty of rhinestones. The outfit also includes a shimmering belt and collar, both decorated with shimmering stones. In this section she wears a simple black wig the length of a bob.

For her acoustic part, Perry was furnished by the Italian designer Valentino , who designed a dress with butterflies for her. In addition to the dress, he also designed a cloak and cape, which glittered silver on the outside. Inside the upper part of the body shows the wings of a butterfly, the lower part is transparent, but also printed with butterflies. She wears a multi-colored wig with the colors pastel blue, pink, green and yellow.

Jeremy Scott, the creative director of Moschino , created the outfit for the "Throwback" section. She wears a yellow and black smiley bra, black leggings with yellow peace signs and a yellow skirt. In selected cities, she sang “It Takes Two”, where she wears a black and white shirt with the Yin and Yang symbols, as well as a matching skirt, which inflates as soon as Katy Perry lifts the platform and turns . It was designed remotely by Katy Perry's close friend and designer Johnny Wujek and Marco Marco . The Yin-Yang costume is removed and she is now also wearing a yellow leather jacket with a smiley face on the back and black sunglasses.

The “Hyper Neon” section follows, where it is not known who designed this costume. She is wearing a palm bra and hip-high, colorful underwear. There are green palm leaves all around over her underwear, she is wearing pink heels and pink stockings. The outfit glows neon.

After Katy Perry changed clothes again, she wears a skin-colored leotard all over her body. This was created by Di $ count Universe . In keeping with the song "Birthday", it contains various objects related to birthdays all over its body. Among other things, two balloons adorn her bust, a bow on her bottom, glitter and confetti and a "Happy Birthday" on her back. For both the “Throwback” and the “Hyper Neon” section (including the birthday), Perry wears a green wig that is tied into two small knots at the back.

The designer Todd Thomas was responsible for the encore . He was also responsible for her costumes for her performance at the 2010 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show . She came back to him and he designed her a dress to match the song Firework . The corset, trousers and shoes are made of blue glitter, the corset and the elbow-length blue gloves also show motifs that match the song. In addition, she wears a dress that is strapped to the corset. It's orange on the inside, while the front shows lots of fireworks too. She wears a black wig with glitter elements with her outfit.

Costume change

Katy Perry with a different costume for the opening song Roar

On May 14, 2014 in Birmingham , Perry wore a red outfit, which is similar to the purple outfit, instead of the purple outfit at the Egyptian section.

During her concerts in Asia she changed various costumes. It is not known whether this happened for religious reasons in relation to the respective country or by chance. In any case, her initial outfit was exchanged for a metallic, purple leotard outfit, which was provided with a cat's face and shining eyes, purple thigh high boots and multi-colored triangles, which, like her previous outfit, also glowed in the dark.

In China, she wore the “Throwback” and “Hyper Neon” sections with a mini dress with splashes of colored paint that looks as if it had just been shot with paint. She also changed her dress in the "Acoustic" section, which was henceforth gold-green with sunflowers on her bust. The wigs stayed the same.

In Latin America she exchanged the outfits for the old ones.

procedure

The concert schedule is described in detail in the following sections:

Prismatic

PWT Prudential Center 9.jpg
Wide awake

The show begins with neon-clad dancers emerging from all corners of the stage with light elements and swords. While the song for Roar is getting closer and closer, certain parts of the stage begin to move upwards, forming a colored closed pyramid. Perry rises from the underbody of this pyramid and emerges, while the closed pyramid sinks again after its appearance. Towards the end, the hall gets dark and the costumes begin to glow through the neon applications of the dancers and Katy Perry. Meanwhile, everyone jump with jumping cords (which also light up) and the song is ended with a tiger cry. Part of Me is the next song, followed by a dubstep version of Wide Awake , where a triangle from the stage floor - with Katy - climbs up and rotates several times. Then she sings the title "This Moment", which changes to "Love Me" a short time later. Perry makes the first costume change.

Egyptian

Katy Perry on a mechanical horse to Dark Horse

To get in the mood for the Egyptian section, a video is played, where Perry initially talks about the ancient culture and the view of the stars and the galaxy, until finally space is left and panned to Egypt, where various pyramids can be seen. She appears on a mechanical horse, she herself wears an Egyptian outfit and sings Dark Horse before singing ET . In ET, a diamond-like scaffold appears down from the air, allowing Perry to float in the air. “Legendary Lovers” is then played before I Kissed a Girl concludes, where - inspired by Peter Paul Rubens - several (female) mummies with big lips, big breasts and a big bottom dance between Perry, which - unconfirmed - possibly one Allusion to various celebrities with (too) much botox and silicone should be. The mummies keep dancing while Katy Perry changes again. The guitarists float with their guitars in the air, which briefly - with pyrotechnics - spray like fireworks.

Cat-Oure

Katy Perry at the cat fashion show

Another video is shown where a cat is shot from the pyramids of Giza directly to "Kittywood" (allusion to Hollywood), where it - in an exaggerated way - engages in various activities with like-minded people (buying shoes, cat parties, etc.) . Perry is a huge cat fan and tries to associate something with cats on every tour. At the end of this video, all of the cats go to the theater to see a performance of "Kitty Purry". She appears on a large ball of wool in a bright pink catsuit accompanied by her dancers, who are also dressed like cats. Perry interprets Hot n Cold ion a jazz version before Perry sings "International Smile". Then Madonna’s Vogue begins , where Perry does not sing, but does a kind of fashion show with various cat objects together with her dancers on one side of the catwalk, before she leaves the stage with International Smile and changes again. Meanwhile, a scene of two dancers is shown where the cat is chasing a mouse.

Perry during the acoustic part

Acoustic

Before she enters the stage, “By The Grace Of God” is instrumentally intoned while a large sunflower opens from above, spanning the entire “Reflection Section”. She enters the stage again in a butterfly dress with a cape and takes time for her fans. In this section, at the beginning, she often speaks freely about various topics, about the location of the concert, her private life and communicates with the fans in the form of selfies or language courses (e.g. "What does '...' in ...") and brings it up or another fan on stage. Then she comes to the end of the stage, which is decorated with many flowers, watering cans and a microphone stand as a sunflower. Subsequently, she sings various songs only with guitar and the background singers, including a mix of "Thinking Of You" and The One That Got Away , Unconditionally and "By The Grace of God". This is her first song, which she wrote after the divorce from herself and Russel Brand , which is why it is also one of her - as she herself says - "most personal and emotional" songs. She withdraws.

Throw Back

In order to bridge the gap again, the beginning of this section is a “Megamix Dance Party”, which the dancers perform. This is a mix of various songs by Katy Perry. A short time later, Perry himself appears and sings "Walking On Air", where - in keeping with the title - she floats in the air with ropes. In selected cities she also sings "It Takes Two" where she throws herself into a huge Yin-Yang costume. A mash-up of Last Friday Night and “This Is How We Do” concludes this section, in which Perry and the dancers drive around the entire stage in an inflatable car and emoji- shaped balloons are distributed around the hall.

At the beginning of the last section before the encore there is a built-in video showing Katy Perry as a mentally ill person in a triangular padded cell jumping up and down. After that she is sprayed with paint from all directions. The lights go out in the cell and the colors glow in the dark before jumping into a pink pool. She appears on stage dressed in light neon colors to sing Teenage Dream . Then she finally sings California Gurls , where the dancers move various letters around in the background in order to recreate the Hollywood Sign at some point . She leaves the stage before she emerges from the stage floor again to sing the song "Birthday" in a colorful one-piece suit (the so-called "Birthday Suit"). During the performance, Perry brings a fan on stage whose birthday is or was close to the day of the concert. This fan then sits at the throne of a rotating birthday cake. Finally, Perry flies around the arena with balloons, while confetti and additional balloons finish off before she leaves the stage again.

She ends the show with firework

Encore

For the encore, a so-called “prism vision” serves as a gap filler, which prompts the visitors to put on the corresponding glasses, which they have already received before, in order to see the additional rainbow diffraction through the glasses intensified while Katy Perry appears. In keeping with the very last song of the concert, Firework , she wears a pompous dress with fireworks motifs. During the song, various fireworks and pyrotechnics explode. Perry ends the show as she started it: She is at the point where the stage parts are now moving up again, forming a pyramid and Perry disappears. The show is over.

stage

One day before the advance booking, Perry gave her fans a first glimpse of what the Prismatic World Tour stage will look like via Twitter . The triangular shape came into play very strongly on this tour. The stage on this tour is shaped like a triangle, and the screen in the background also adapts to this shape. Within this triangle there is the so-called "Reflection Section", which enables selected fans (with the corresponding tickets) to be even closer to the action. They are only separated from Perry and her dancers by a cordon and can even touch the stage. The walkways of the triangle are provided with a so-called roller band on the left and right up to a certain length, with which one can interact. In the middle of the actual stage there are three more illuminated triangles that can move upwards, which subsequently - as already mentioned - look like a pyramid. The sub-floor can also be slid down, which Katy Perry uses to appear in and out of the hall. To the right of these triangles there is also an elevator, which she takes for various costume changes. This can also be found at the tip of the triangle, which is also the end of the stage. A round turntable is also installed there, which enables the artists to turn in a circle. This turntable is mainly used in the Egyptian part, especially at Dark Horse . In addition, the stage triangle is illuminated on the outside. The band as well as the background singers stand in front of the large triangular screen, a triangular frame also served as additional props directly in front of the screen and a crystal-like shape with which they could swing upwards.

Recordings and televised broadcasts of the tour

Perry's taped "Birthday" performance from her Newcastle show was broadcast live during the 2014 Billboard Music Awards on May 18, 2014. On May 25, 2014 she gave a concert for BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend , which was live on their website. A live version of “Legends Never Die” sung by Ferras accompanied by Katy Perry, which was recorded at the Staples Center , was uploaded to YouTube . It has been announced that the last two shows in Sydney will be filmed on December 12th and 13th, which will be used as footage for a concert film by Perry. On March 28, 2015, the 2-hour concert recording was finally broadcast on the television station Epix. At an exclusive Epix Q&A for the film, Perry announced that there would also be a DVD of the tour, but that she would have to change one thing before that. Netflix added the concert to its streaming service on June 26, 2015. The concert film was released for DVD and Blu-Ray on October 30, 2015. In addition to the concert, both formats also include 30-minute extras. Their concert at the Rock in Rio Festival on September 27, 2015 was broadcast live on various television channels in Brazil and made available internationally on the Internet.

sale

Ticket sales

The first leg of the tour (England, Scotland, Northern Ireland) achieved a very high level of demand, which is why additional shows in Belfast, Glasgow and London were announced within a few hours of the actual ticket sales. A little later, further concerts in Manchester and Birmingham were announced. Additional concerts have also been announced in the United States and Canada. Due to the enormous demand for pre-sales, Perry has announced more concerts in Australia, especially in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, and has extended them until December.

Perry during the acoustic part

Forbes' Jesse Lawrence reported that tickets for the North American leg of the tour cost an average of $ 252 at the secondary market. He also analyzed that the tickets for Perry's Prismatic World Tour are much more expensive than those of their colleagues like Beyoncé and Lady Gaga . He quotes in full:

"With Prismatic holding one of the highest tour average prices of the summer, the secondary market won't have many dates dropping below a $ 200 average price. (Due to the fact that the Prismatic World Tour is one of the tours where the highest average prices are charged, it will be difficult for the secondary market to find shows where the average price is below $ 200) "

- Jesse Lawrence, Forbes

In the introduced "Mid Year Top 100 Worldwide Tours list" by Pollstar , which was published in July 2014 and all tour dates were counted up to that day, Perry's now placed third tour in 26th place, where 22 million dollars were grossed , as well as 249,716 tickets for 22 shows sold to date. The Prismatic World Tour hit the top of the Billboard's weekly Hot Tours chart the week of September 18th. The tour topped the charts with $ 31 million in ticket sales at 21 American concerts, which were taken in a span of two months.

The tour topped the record for the largest ticket sales at the Allphones Arena , where a total of 89,500 tickets were sold for six concerts. Paul Dainty from Dainty Group, the promoter of the Australian section, said “We could have added another dozen shows everywhere easily.” (We could easily have added many more shows anywhere).

Gross profit

The Prismatic World Tour was an international success and Perry's most successful tour to date. The tour was the second-highest-grossing tour and the highest-grossing, led by a female artist, in North America with average box office earnings per city in 2014. According to Pollstar , this tour was the fourth-best-selling tour around the world, and the best sold by a female artist in 2014, grossing $ 153 million and viewing 1,407,972. It was particularly successful in North America, where it became the 25th best-selling tour of all time, with sales of up to $ 94.3 million. This made it the third best-selling tour in North America in 2014. Perry's tour was also a huge success in Australia, where it sold 350,000 tickets across the country and the Allphones Arena attendance record , with more than 89,000 tickets in this arena alone , has broken. The success remained a huge success in 2015 as well. Pollstar's 2015 Mid-Year Top 100 Worldwide Tour list announced the Prismatic World Tour as the 23rd highest grossing tour, totaling $ 25.8 million from 35 shows and 373,133 visitors. In a semi-annual report by Pollstar , the value was adjusted because the Prismatic World Tour took 35.7 million dollars at 35 international concerts in the first half of the year instead of 25.8 million dollars. On the other hand, Billboard announced a week later that the Prismatic World Tour raised over $ 41.7 million from 27 concerts in the first half of 2015.

Perry's performance at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne was ranked eleventh on Pollstar's 2014 Top Year End International Boxoffice list. At the 2014 Billboard Touring Awards , the tour won the “Top Package” award and was also nominated for the “Concert Marketing & Promotion” category. Perry was also Ticketmaster's seventh most wanted artist in 2014.

Reviews

During the song Birthday it floats in the air

The tour received good to very good reviews. Colin Stutz from Billboard magazine called the show in Belfast "a spectacle of costumes and colors". Emilee Lindner of MTV News felt that Perry had lived out her "promise" to make the concert a "feast for the eyes and for Instagram " and noticed the recurring cat section on the show. Mike Wass from the Idolator website praised the costumes and dubbed the concert a “candy-colored visual extravaganza”. Matteh Magee of The Daily Telegraph went to one of the shows in Glasgow and gave the tour four stars out of five. He stated that Perry "made a natural connection with their audience where their colleagues would die for it." Richard Clayton of the Financial Times gave the concert an excellent rating by giving it five stars out of five. He described the concert as “technically insanely good, visually spectacular and fun, fun, fun.” Daisy Watt of the daily newspaper The Independent criticized Perry's singing and stage presence and awarded it three out of five stars. Rolling Stone magazine's Mark Sutherland praised the tour, describing it as "loud, garish, exaggerated and never less than insanely entertaining". At the same time for him it is a "show where retinas are destroyed and knocks everyone down".

Jem Aswad of the US weekly The Village Voice watched the Madison Square Garden show and says:

“Better than: Every other multimillion dollar concert I've seen so far. Most of all, for all the cost and atomic splitting technology, the Prismatic World Tour is fun, smart, and pleasing to the public. And I buy that more than like a bombast taken too seriously, which normally accompanies shows of this scale on every other day of the week. "

- Jem Aswad, The Village Voice

Nate Chinen of The New York Times gave the same show mixed ratings. He said the "music was subordinate to the spectacle" although he dubbed the concert as a "spectacle of pop idol proportions". Pitchfork Media 's Lindsay Zoladz commented on one of the concerts at New York's Barclays Center as follows:

"I thought about the concert the same way I think about Katy Perry as a whole: she throws everything she has on the wall, every now and then it's a direct hit"

- Lindsay Zoladz, Pitchfork Media

Three other journalists from the Pitchfork website gave the show mixed ratings. Billboard's Jason Lipshutz rated the same show positively. He said, "The superstar is at his best, and Prismatic's Brooklyn debut seemed bright." Los Angeles Times ' August Brown gave the tour a generally positive review:

"The show at the Honda Center proved that Perrys is a personality that will last, but a few blunders came into the presentation."

- August Brown, Los Angeles Times

Michael Roffman of Consequence of Sound named Perry one of the top live acts of 2014, adding that the Prismatic World Tour was "similar to that of the late King and the still surrendering Queen of Pop - Michael Jackson and Madonna - and - respectively - Perry creates an unforgettable event for her legions of fans.
