The Rod Laver Arena is a tennis stadium in the second largest Australian city of Melbourne in the state of Victoria , with 14,820 seats it is the largest venue for the Australian Open and is part of the sports facilities in Melbourne Park . Since the stadium has a roof structure that can be closed in 25 minutes, it can also be played in the rain or in great heat. Various other sporting events or concerts can be held through the roof in the multifunctional hall .
history
The tennis stadium was built from 1985 to 1987 as part of Flinders Park and was initially called the National Tennis Center at Flinders Park . In January 1988 the first Australian Open took place in the new facility. In 1996 it was named Center Court . Since 2000 it has been named Rod Laver Arena in honor of the famous Australian tennis player and two-time Grand Slam winner Rod Laver . It has a total of 14,820 seats and is visited by around 1.5 million viewers every year.
The spectrum of events in the Rod Laver Arena ranges from the Australian Open to motocross events to music concerts and classical ballet . In 2005 the gymnastics world championships took place in the hall. At the 12th FINA - World Swimming Championships in 2007 , the arena was converted to the swimming stadium. For safety reasons, the seating capacity has been reduced from 14,820 to 11,270. The arena is about ten minutes' walk from the city center.
