Witness is the fifth studio album by American singer Katy Perry . It was released on June 9, 2017 by Capitol Records .
background
After the Prismatic World Tour ended in 2015, Perry told the New York Times in a February 2016 interview that she wanted to rest for some time to "develop". Perry told the American radio and television presenter Ryan Seacrest that she “don't rush” with the production of the fifth album and that she prefers to try new types of music with new producers. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly , Perry confirmed that the album will contain 15 of the 40 newly written songs and describes your album as "danceable."
Promotion and publication
Even before Katy Perry published the name of the fifth studio album, the music streaming service Spotify and the video platform YouTube announced major promotions. Spotify used Katy Perry as a testimonial and recorded large billboards in America and Great Britain, not only to promote Perry's new album, but also to make the streaming service more attractive to artists after high compensation payments to artists. In May 2017, Perry announced the name of the album and at the same time announced the Witness: The Tour world tour. In June 2017, Perry announced the European tour dates.
With the release of the album on June 9, 2017, Perry announced a four-day live stream in cooperation with YouTube. Under the name Witness World Wide, YouTube streamed live for 24 hours, based on the TV format Big Brother , from a house that was prepared with 41 cameras. Perry lived in this house for four days and was therefore under constant surveillance. Based on the name of your album Witness (in German Zeuge ) you should be able to witness your normal life. Before the start of each day, Perry's social media posted a daily schedule in which various activities were planned, such as question and answer sessions via social media, yoga or dinner with well-known personalities such as Sia , James Corden , Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Caitlyn Jenner .
Single releases
The first single Chained to the Rhythm was released on February 10, 2017 and reached number one in the charts in Hungary. Chained to the Rhythm includes a rapped part by Skip Marley . The second single, called Bon Appétit , was released on April 28, 2017 and features a guest post by Migos . Swish Swish was released as the third single on May 29, 2017 and features a rap by Nicki Minaj .
reception
The opinions of music critics sometimes differ. While the site Metacritic .com only awards 54 out of a possible 100 points and the music database Allmusic only 2 out of 5 stars, the British New Musical Express rates the album with 4 out of 5 stars.

Deluxe Edition
The Deluxe Edition of Witness was only available in America and Japan until Perry released it everywhere on the first anniversary of the Witness album. The Deluxe Edition contains two more titles. The Japanese Deluxe Edition also contains the music video for the single Chained to the Rhythm and its making-of.
