Bon Appétit is a song by the US singer Katy Perry from 2017, which she recorded with the rap trio Migos . The second single of their fifth studio album Witness was produced by Max Martin , Shellback and Oscar Holter , as well as being written by all participating artists and producers together with Ferras .
background
In the run-up, Katy Perry published a recipe for the "world's best cherry cake " in order to promote the single on Instagram , which is also peppered with allusions to various lines of text. A few days later, the singer and her team drove to Times Square in a truck to distribute the same baked goods there.
Shortly after the song was announced, Katy Perry received negative feedback regarding the choice of her collaboration partner , as Migos previously attracted attention through homophobic comments about the rapper iLoveMakonnen . In particular, given Perry's own past as a pro- LGBT ambassador and rumors that Ariana Grande was a feature , the musician was criticized.
Music and lyrics
Bon Appétit is a pop song that is characterized by a catchy synthesizer melody that is particularly evident during the chorus . The verses , on the other hand, are predominantly underlaid by muted drums . Only when the same is repeated in the second chorus does a pounding beat set in . Katy Perry sings the first two verses and the chorus, while the members of Migos rap the third verse and Quavo sings background vocals from the second verse . In terms of content, the song uses ambiguous, food-related lines as culinary euphemisms for cunnilingus . The singer says it is spread out like a buffet or that it is part of the menu itself.
Music video
At the beginning of the video clip for Bon Appétit , which was directed by Dent De Cuir , you can see how the title is written using a piping bag through icing on a dough before neon tubes are faded in , which form the abbreviation " NSFW ". Then it is shown how Katy Perry is prepared - often in comic slapstick fashion. After she has been unwrapped from cling film , her back and legs are rubbed with flour during a massage and (physically impossible) kneaded like a dough. Later, in one scene, she is sitting in a huge soup pot , reminiscent of a whirlpool , before her hair is cut off, her tongue is flambéed and her skin is coated with gravy in another . Garnished with vegetables and now apparently ready to serve, Katy Perry, who is still alive, is driven into a room and brought to a round table. Migos are also in the same room, but they are sitting separately at another table, carrying large bundles of cash with them. When the musician a bell rings, Migos move an eagle - statue and members of the Table Round are bound by mechanism on their chairs. Suddenly Perry sits up and begins a pole dance as a metal rod rises from the table , while the guests are blindfolded by the cooks . In the last scene you see the singer sitting with a knife and fork at a table on which there is a cake with parts of the body sticking out.
criticism
The reviews of Bon Appétit varied greatly. Positive reviews said the song was a subtle but fun party number; even through his puns, he would be the kind of song Perry could do best. Particularly praised were the positively silly premise of the song and its comedy character, as well as the guest part of Migos. It would be a "self-confident, addicting" summer hit that would benefit in particular from the collaboration of Max Martin. However, negative reviews panned the oral sex - metaphors , or the lack of fine-tuning and "ample crude" approach in preparing this. The same joke would repeat itself throughout the song and would be too trite and cheesy from the start that it would eventually become uncomfortable and even spoil the desire for oral sex.
